Tai Chi Workshop at The Baytree Centre: A Beautiful Afternoon of Movement & Calm
Last Thursday, 20th November, I had the privilege of running a 45-minute Tai Chi workshop in Brixton at the wonderful Baytree Centre. The Baytree Centre is an established educational charity for women and girls, offering personal development, mentoring, ESOL and wellbeing support. It includes programmes designed to help newly arrived migrant and refugee women integrate into the community. Their work is relational, trauma-informed, and rooted in supporting women to build confidence and thrive.
As part of their wellbeing and mindfulness programme, which included sessions on menopause and emotional regulation, I was invited to introduce the group to Tai Chi for wellbeing. We had around twenty women taking part, most of whom had never tried Tai Chi before, and they approached the session with curiosity, and openness.
We began with a gentle Tai Chi warm-up and simple breathwork for stress, focusing on diaphragmatic breathing rather than upper-chest breathing. This small shift can immediately help calm the nervous system, making it a natural complement to the mindfulness techniques they had already been exploring.
From there, we worked through a short five-form Tai Chi pattern. Even though it was all new, the group engaged beautifully. There were moments of quiet concentration, moments of shared giggles, and that unmistakable Tai Chi feeling, when everyone begins to move and breathe together in unison. It was a lovely reminder of how accessible Tai Chi for beginners can be, especially in a supportive group environment.
It was genuinely uplifting to witness how quickly Tai Chi can create connection, grounding, and confidence, even within a single short session.
A powerful model for accessible wellbeing workshops
This workshop also highlighted how effective a hybrid wellness format can be, blending movement, breathwork, and mindful awareness in a way that feels natural and inclusive. Because Tai Chi is low-impact and adaptable, it works brilliantly for community groups, charities, and corporate wellbeing sessions across London who want to support stress reduction, grounding, and overall wellbeing.
If your organisation in Brixton or wider London is interested in hosting something similar, I offer tailored Tai Chi and wellbeing workshops for groups of all sizes, from charities and community programmes to workplace wellness initiatives.
